Check Your Internet Connection Speed. Obviously, to achieve higher downloading speed you are. You Cannot Go Higher Than Your ISP Plan. The first thing to understand is that you cannot have.

It has been over 13 years since we are using BitTorrent, uTorrent or other Torrent downloading application to download our desired files through torrent. The mechanism of torrent is quite effective. The computers which are downloading files becomes downloading server for other computers which are downloading files from same torrent. It increases speed (as we get many downloading servers at once) and provides continuous download (for popular torrents).

But, there are many important tweaks and configuration available in Torrent clients that help you boost the torrent downloading speed. Here, I am considering the most popular and widely used torrent client, BitTorrent.

Implement these below provided tips and tricks to boost Bittorrent speed.

1. Check Your Internet Connection Speed

Obviously, to achieve higher downloading speed you are required to have a faster connection, whether you are downloading from torrent, any other downloader or directly via web browser. Might, your network connection is fast enough but some settings are not configured probperly so read our article upoon effective tips to increase internet downloading speed which tells you the best tips to take your downloading to peak point.

Also, if your connection is slow and you’re not only concerned about downloading then check our article upon how to browse fast in slow internet connection.

2. Configure Your DNS Server

By default, while connecting to internet your computer automatically detect and assign DNS servers for your IP address. These DNS servers can be fast or slow and result in making your connection faster or slower. So it’s better to change your DNS server to widely known fast DNS servers, either Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or OpenDNS server (208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222).

3. Choose The Perfect BitTorrent Client

As listed by Wikipedia, there are a total of 51 popular Torrent clients. Some may not be available for your operating system but out of those torrent download software which are available for your OS, check out the reviews, ratings and details to get the idea about best torrent client for your PC.

Read the list of all available BitTorrent Clients and their comparison.

4. Choose Healthy Torrent Files

Whenever you search torrent for a software, movie, etc. you finds a lot of result. Many different torrent comes out in the result among which most of the torrents works. But, you are recommended to choose those torrent which have been uploaded recently, have large number of seeds and few leech.

Seeders – Who have already downloaded the torrent and helping others to download it.

Leechers/Peers – Who are currently downloading the torrent.

Obviously, more number of seeders will increase the number of downloading servers which will increase your downloading speed while leechers will use the same downloading servers, making your downloading slow.

5. Unblock BitTorrent Client from Firewall

By default, Windows Firewall doesn’t allow BitTorrent client to utilize your internet connection. So, to make it work and download fast, you are required to unblock your Bittorrent application from Windows Firewall.

To do this, open Bittorrent. Now, navigate to Options > Preference. Here, at the Connection tab, check the box ‘Add Windows Firewall exception’.

6. Prioritize Your Torrent

There might be more than one torrent running on your system. So, it’s better to either pause other torrents, if you can’t do this, prioratize your main Torrent file for high badwidth allocation. To do this, right click on your main torrent file at Bittorrent, from Bandwidth Allocation, choose High. In the same option, Set download limit to Unlimited and upload limit to a 10kbps.

Moreover, if the torrent is NOT a single file then you can download those files of the torrent first, which you think, is important. Option is provided to prioritize torrent files too, separately.

7. Choose Different Downloading Ports

By default, Bittorrent client uses port number between 6881 and 6999 but it is recommended to choose any port number above 10000. These ports are less frequently used by other applications so they will offer you higher torrent downloading speed and continuous downloading.

To configure port number, from the Bittorrent, navigate to Preferences > Connection. At the listening port section. Add port number to “Port used for incoming connection” field. Uncheck Randomize port on each start, if it’s checked.

8. Increase Number of Max_HalfOpen TCP Connections

Files have been downloaded by the means of TCP connections over the internet. The more the number of simultaneous connections, the fast you’ll get downloading speed. By default, Windows XP and many other Windows versions limit number of simultaneous connections to 10.

Use LvlLord to increase the number of simultaneous connections on XP. It modifies thr TCPIP.sys file in Windows to allow higher number of simultaneous TCP connections. Set connections to higher digit, lets say, 50.

Now, you’re required to increase number of TCP connections at your torrent client. To do this, open Bittorrent, navigate to Options > Preferences > Advanced.

Locate net.max_halfopen and change its value to a number near to max TCP connection your have configured in TCPIP.sys file. For example, lets change 8 to 45:

9. Bandwidth and Connections

Navigate to Options > Preferences > Bandwidth and at the Number of Connections tab configure these few settings:

Global maximum number of connections – It limit the maximum number of connections that a BitTorrent client is allowed to create for a Peer to Peer (P2P) exchange. Configuring it too high does NOT mean high speed. It would take up useless bandwidth and too low figure would miss out some peers. For my 256 kbps connection, I set it to 130.

Maximum number of connected Peer per torrent – Maximum number of peers that a BitTorrent client can connect to for any P2P exchange. Experiment by setting a number close to available peer for a particular connection. For my 256kbps connection, it is configured to 70.

Number of upload slots per torrent – Gives maximum number of peers that a BitTorrent client will upload to for any P2P exchange. A low setting would affect download. For my 256 kbps connection, I set it to 3.

10. Some Common Tips – That Make Sense

  • Do NOT “Force Start” your torrent. It will led to start all the torrents available in the queue. This will spread out your upload capacity over too many connections and thus, your downloading speed will get affected.
  • Enable ‘DHT network’ and ‘UPnP port mapping’ but disable ‘NAT/Firewall configuration’
  • Try to use internet less, while downloading your file.
  • If you can, identify useless processes that are consuming your network’s bandwidth and end them at Task Manager.

How to Increase Torrent Download Speed:

Step 1: You should choose the best torrent client like: Bit Torrent, Bit Comet, and uTorrent, etc.

By choosing the best torrent client allows you to download a file in maximum speed. There are many torrent clients available in market, just go for the best.

Step 2: You should choose torrent with good trackers, peers and seeds.

Choosing the right torrent will allow to download your required file easily and fastly. If you choose a weak torrent that has less number of tracker, seeds and peers then it is you may not get fast downloading speed. Always download a torrent which has at least one seeds. Trackers are too important factor which should be cared for before choosing a torrent file. Check the properties of your torrent that you can find in the list of trackers. If a particular torrent has weak seeds and peers then you can re-announce the same to increase its speed.

Step 3: You should change the settings of your torrent client.

Just change the settings of your torrent client, so that the downloading speed could be increased. To do so, change few settings like “Bandwidth”, port is also helpful in increasing the torrent downloading speed.

Step 4: You can also download a torrent from downloading manager software like: DAP, IDM, and Orbit, etc.

Increase Utorrent Download Speed

As you all know that torrent clients use the torrent protocol which is peer-to-peer files sharing protocol to download any file. Even the P2P protocol is best among all others to download any file but some times downloading a file using other protocol can help increasing the download speed.

Step 5: You can increase the number of Max Half Open TCP connections.

Download

The Max Half Open TCP connections specify that how many connections a torrent client should attempt to establish simultaneously at any given time. Operating Systems like Windows XP-SP2and newer, limits this to a default of 10.As torrents need a large number of simultaneous connections you can increase your torrent downloading speed by changing this figure.

A patch has been available for a while from LvlLord which modifies the TCPIP.sys file in Windows to allow a higher number of TCP connections.

How To Increase Torrent Download Speed

After running the patch, you have to change your torrent client settings also. In uTorrent go to:

“Options > Preferences > Advanced > net.max_halfopen.

Set any numbers from 50 to 100, don’t use more than that, as specified. Also keep checking “TCPIP.sys” for cross verifying the number of Max Half Open TCP connections.

Important: You must understand that you cannot get more downloading speed than your bandwidth [max internet speed]. So, this tutorial can just optimize your downloads to the best speed provided by your Internet service provider.
