Before we start, make sure that you backup your Mac. The best way to do this is to use Time Machine, which is a built-in Mac feature. You would need an external hard drive with capacity equal to or more than your Mac’s storage. Connect it to your Mac, go to System Preferences > Time Machine and select it as your backup disk. The first backup always takes the longest so it is best to do this when you don’t need to use your Mac.

Now that we have the mandatory back up out of the way, it’s time for the fun stuff. The first step: sign up for an Apple Developer account. This will cost you $99/year. If you do not want to spend the money, you can download the macOS 11 Big Sur beta access utility at betaprofiles.com.

Once logged in, head over to Downloads and look for macOS 11 Big Sur developer beta. Download the beta access utility to your computer.

  1. Open the macOS Developer Beta Access Utility DMG and run the pkg file inside. This is an installer that will enroll your Mac to receive developer beta updates. Launch this installer and follow the instructions.
  2. Once the installation completes, open System Preferences > Software Update to find macOS 11 Big Sur beta. Start the download.
  3. Click on upgrade now to start the download process. Once the download completes, start the installation. Your Mac might restart a few times during the installation and it might also take a long time so make sure that your Mac (if portable) is plugged in to an outlet and not on battery power.

Windows Installation Notes

There are two downloads available for Windows users.

This archive includes both SQL Developer and an embedded copy of the Java 8 Development Kit (JDK). Simply extract the zip to a fresh directory and run the sqldeveloper.exe in the top directory. The EXE is configured to run the embedded JDK by default.

Note: the Windows EXE requires a MSVCR100.dll to run. Most computers will already have this file and in the Windows PATH. However, if the first copy of the file found by the EXE is a 32-bit copy of the DLL, then SQL Developer will fail to start. You can fix this by copying a 64-bit version of the DLL into the BIN directory or updating your OS PATH such that a 64 bit copy of the DLL is found first.

Windows 32-bit/64-bit

This archive. will work on a 32 or 64 bit Windows OS. The bit level of the JDK you install will determine if it runs as a 32 or 64 bit application. This download does not include the required Oracle Java JDK. You will need to install it if it's not already on your machine. We officially support Oracle JDK 8 or 11.

Mac Os X Developer Tools

If SQL Developer cannot find Java on your machine, it will prompt you for the path for a JDK home. This only occurs the first time you launch SQL Developer. A valid Java Home on Windows will be similar to
